Installing on Windows

This chapter covers how you install Inkscape on Windows.

System Requirements

Windows 10 64-bit or above is required for Inkscape 1.5.

The last version that will run on Windows 7 and higher is Inkscape 1.4.

The last version that offers 32-bit builds is Inkscape 1.3.2.

The last version officially supporting Windows Vista and XP is Inkscape 0.92.3.

Download and Install Inkscape from the Website

  1. Go to Inkscape’s download page with a web browser. The site may redirect you to the appropriate download.

  2. Select an installation method from the choices available:

    • exe, msi: Installers

    • compressed (7z): Archive containing the ready-to-run program

  3. The download should start automatically. Once the download is complete, double-click on the installer in the file explorer, or click on the downloaded file in the browser to initiate the install.

  4. Run through the installer and adjust as necessary.

  5. Once the installer is complete, press Finish to quit the installer. If Launch Inkscape is checked, wait a few seconds for Inkscape to launch. Otherwise, click on the Inkscape entry in the Start menu.

Downloading and Installing Inkscape via Winget

Winget is Microsoft’s latest attempt at creating a universal package manager for Windows. If you have Winget installed, run in a terminal:

winget install -e --id Inkscape.Inkscape

After the command finishes, Inkscape should appear in the Start menu.

Downloading and Installing Inkscape via Microsoft Store

It is also possible to install Inkscape from the Microsoft Store.

  1. Click on this direct link to Inkscape on the Microsoft Store.

  2. Click Install.

After the install is finished, the program should appear in the Start menu.

Warning

The Microsoft Store version may be outdated; we recommend installing from the website.

Downloading and Running Inkscape via PortableApps.com

The last method is to run Inkscape as a portable app, with the installer provided by PortableApps.com. Learn more about the concept of portable apps on their website.

  1. Navigate to the Inkscape PortableApps page.

  2. Click Download from PortableApps.com.

  3. After downloading, click on the downloaded file in your web browser or double-click on the installer in the file explorer.

  4. Run through the installer and adjust when needed.

  5. In the extracted InkscapePortable folder, run the executable InkscapePortable.exe.

Warning

The PortableApps version is outdated at the time of writing (2025-04-07). Only choose this method if you want to retain settings across devices on a USB stick.

After installing, either go to Setting Up Inkscape to set up a document, or Quickstart to create a piece of artwork.
