Why Use Inkscape?

Inkscape is the ideal tool for drawing logos and icons, for creating (animatable) graphics for websites, for composing posters and flyers, or for making patterns for cutting machines and laser engravers.

It is a good choice for drawing short comics, making art, building user interface mockups and making or editing diagrams created by other software. People use it for fun projects, such as map-making, creating birthday cards, painting on eggs, 2D game graphics and for many, many more purposes.

It also fits easily into a design workflow. Many professionals use Inkscape to create and edit vector graphics, in order to animate them with animation software, extrude them with 3D software, or use them in technical and engineering drawings within CAD software.

What have people created with Inkscape?

On the Inkscape website, there is a gallery full of artwork and other projects people made in Inkscape. You can also follow the #Inkscape and #MadeWithInkscape hashtags on various social media platforms.

What can I do with it?

Inkscape can be used at work or at home, for professional or personal work. What you create with it is entirely yours, and you are free to distribute, share it, sell it, whatever you’d like – or keep it to yourself! Although please keep in mind, if you incorporate someone else’s work in your drawing, you need to respect the copyright of the individual files.

How much does it cost?

Inkscape is gratis, that is, cost-free: you can download and install it as many times as you want without paying either a fixed fee or a subscription, and give it away to friends, provided you agree with the free software GNU General Public License (GPL). The only investment you’ll need to make is to learn to use it and gain new skills.

You can also donate to allow the project volunteers to dedicate more time to it.

Why not Inkscape?

Inkscape is not the ideal tool for some other purposes, such as the creation of raster graphics (see the difference between vector and raster graphics). Nonetheless, there are very powerful alternative free software programs which we recommend without reservations:
